All lanes of the M1 have been brought to a standstill following a reported medical incident between Junction 29A and Junction 30, near Barlborough on the Derbyshire and South Yorkshire border.
Traffic monitoring services report that the incident initially affected the northbound carriageway. However, delays quickly spread, and traffic has now been halted in both directions. Cameras from the scene show long queues of vehicles stretching back-to-back, with some travellers stepping out of their cars while waiting for the situation to be resolved.
According to National Highways, the closure began shortly before 10:00am, with all traffic stopped at approximately 9:55am. The AA confirmed that congestion has affected both sides of the motorway between J29A and J30, near the A616 junction.
Motorists are being advised to seek alternative routes and prepare for significant delays while emergency services respond to the situation. Authorities have indicated that they expect the incident to be cleared by around midday, though delays may continue for some time afterward as traffic begins to move again.
Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
